Lutheran Schools

A Brief History

Lutheranism began with the efforts of Martin Luther (1483-1546), a German Augustine priest who started the Protestant Reformation. Before his reformation work, Luther sought to live his life completely according to the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church, trying to find peace for his soul and ensure that he was just before God.

Living his life with strict adherence to Church teachings and still not finding peace, Luther turned to prayer and studying the scripture. Soon, a turning point came for him – he felt that the Church was leading people down the wrong path and should instead teach, "by grace alone, through faith alone, because of Christ alone." Although Luther intended to reform the Church and not create a different Christian denomination, he was excommunicated by Pope Leo X.

Lutheranism Today

Lutheranism is one of the largest Protestant religions today. The foundation is still that salvation comes only by grace alone, faith alone, and through Christ alone. There are Lutheran congregations in over 100 countries around the world. In America and Canada, there are over 19,000 churches, ministered by 29,000 Clergy and an inclusive membership of 8.5 million.
