An Introduction to the Baptist Faith

Although some Baptist churches may differ slightly from one another, most churches share their faith’s most fundamental beliefs with each other and with other Christians. These beliefs are often referred to as "orthodox" Christian beliefs, and they include beliefs about one God, the virgin birth, Jesus Christ’s sinless life, the Holy Trinity, the Kingdom of God, the need for salvation, evangelism and missions.

Unlike most other denominations, Baptists do not have a central governing authority. This individual and local church autonomy means that some Baptist churches have the freedom to adopt their own written statements of faith and beliefs.

Many Baptist churches can choose to associate with denominational groups that support the church without exerting control over the church’s activities. Two of the largest Baptist associations are the Baptist World Alliance and the Southern Baptist Convention, but there are many other associations available. Churches may also choose to remain autonomous of any denomination, organization or association.

Important Baptist Beliefs

The Bible and its scriptures are incredibly important to those of the Baptist faith. They see the Bible as the only authoritative source of God’s truth, and most views that cannot be traced back to scriptural writings are often seen as a human tradition, rather than God’s leading. In the Baptist faith, each individual is responsible before God for his or her own understanding of the Bible, and all members of the faith are encouraged to work toward their own salvation.
