Associate Pastor
An associate pastor assists the senior pastor in religious services, leading prayer and daily operations of the church. The associate pastor position can vary greatly from church to church. A vital element of the associate pastor's job includes maintaining and growing membership of the church. Tasks of the associate pastor are often built around this and may include:
- Assisting in scheduling and coordinating events
- Providing counseling to those in need
- Assisting with and developing adult and children's Christian education
- Coordinating efforts with youth ministers
To become an associate pastor, most organizations require a bachelor's or master's degree in religious studies and 2-4 years experience in the field or a related area.
Because of the latitude often given to associate pastors, they must rely on experience, judgment and creativity to plan and accomplish goals. They must also have leadership skills because directing the work of others can be a daily part of their job.
